Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. I’m pretty sure as brilliant as Sir Isaac Newton was, he had not the slightest idea his law was referring to human lives as much as it was referring to inanimate objects.
Over a year away from blogging and I mark my return with inspirational crap instead of a captivating fiction story? Maybe it means I’m getting old, or boring, or both. But I really have to say this, write this, as the case may be.
So, let me ask you a question. Reflect on your life this very moment. Recall the last few days, the last few weeks, the last few months even. Has there been any real difference between how you spent last week Tuesday and this week’s Tuesday or the week before last? A lot of us get stuck in a loop—Inertia without even realizing it till it’s too late. I take that back, we do realize it, but all we do is mouth about it to our friends and lament without actually taking any tentative steps to save us. My favorite quote from Game of Thrones is “Words are wind.”
I’ve come to the conclusion the problem isn’t with the unemployed, the job seekers or the hustlers. No! Let’s look at that law again. There’s a condition for stagnancy illustrated by Newton, “an object at rest”. So, we get a decent paying (or maybe not decent paying) job that fully engages us during weekdays. At the start, we promise ourselves to make out time for dream chasing and fun catching and such and such. Then two months pass by and we have fallen into the inertial rest.
Worse is the second condition stated in the law, “an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction.” Maybe some of us are comfortable with that steady, unwavering, mono-directional course of life. If you are one of those, I have no idea why you have even read this write-up up to this point.
But if you are like me, if you detest being in one place (at rest) and detest the current direction you are heading to and the current speed you are on even more, if you dare to dream big, then I think it’s time we found that unbalanced force that shakes us out of inertia. Maybe it might be this write up, maybe something else.
Here in Nigeria, the ruling party was overturned by a party whose slogan was one word, “Change”! Apparently, we all acknowledge there needs to be a change. I’m hardly political, and if I was, I hugely doubt I’ll be waving flags for the aforementioned party, but one of their slogan does make sense. “Change begins with you.”
Reject the normal! Reject the status quo! Do something different! Anything! As long as it’s different, as long as it shakes the rigorous structure of your everyday life. Do something fun! Do something that’ll make you happy! Do something that’ll remind you of why you live! Ignite that passion! Remember that dream! We can’t live forever (not on earth at least) so let’s make best use of the time we have here.
Let me close with a quote I once saw on Facebook.
“What if your salary is the bribe they give you to forget your dreams?”
